At Cypress College, a student shared a classroom video of an adjunct professor (a Muslim Middle Eastern woman), with ultra conservative media who portrayed her as a ‘police hating indoctrinating professor’. In the video, the professor challenges the student’s opinion of police officers as heroes in the Q&A portion of his presentation on “Cancel Culture” in her Communications course. The student presented his opinion of police officers without acknowledgement of the context and the array of perspectives that it evokes - 2021, amidst the largest mobilization in US History against police brutality, specifically for its toll on Black lives. Then he decided to ‘cancel’ the professor for challenging his incomplete narrative.
The college classroom is a place for vigorous academic inquiry, where professors challenge students to contextualize their perspectives beyond their own experiences. It is the duty of college Districts to protect academic spaces for sometimes uncomfortable but healthy open dialogue. Yet, in the context of the ‘free speech crusaders’ on college campuses, some students are determined to violating recording and academic freedom policies to fulfill their own political agendas.
The story has gained national scorn from conservatives accompanied by amassing threats to the professor’s life (along with anyone who was mistaken to be her or associated to her). This fundraiser is to help this professor with legal fees and with the necessary costs for security measures to maintain her family safe while violent white supremacists attempt to harm her.
