A Brave Space, for Brave Students.

Brave Space, a Coalition of Black students and parents in Santa Clara County, was created to provide a brave space for Black students and community leaders, to come together, build community and shares ways to safely address the discrimination, micro aggression and racism we experience every day. Blacks students only make up 2-2.% of the 200,000 students in our county, and with an average of 31% of Black students graduating, it's rooted in unconscious bias, discriminatory polices, lack of funding to support Black student achievement, that leads to the unequal treatment of Black students across school campuses.

Every day we mourn the death of innocent Black Women, Men and our families, at the hands of police, people in the community and on even our extreme mishandling on our schools campuses. As Black students, parents, sisters and brothers, we wonder who is next and while at the same time hoping that next never comes. Connecting the lack of education support, no deescalation approach and lack of funding, is at the root of Black students needs. This continues to be a problem and we are taking action.

On Friday, June 19th, Brave Spaces will be joining Black youth leaders, adult leaders and allies, and hosting a march on "Juneteenth" 2020. This is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States.  Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. We are marching on this monumental day, as we are still oppressed, we are still being targeted and we are still not free.

We are hosting a march, from Santa Clara University, to San Jose State, as most of our students will be attending these local schools, and recognize we need to address these issues we find in our community, from our K-12 schools to colleges.

Brave Space is getting support and students and families are joining in high numbers, showing this is a need in Santa Clara County. Our youth are turning this organization into a non-profit and we need your help to fund events to make them extra special for the community. So far, at our discussions, our SBBC leaders have paid out of pocket for food and have offered up their homes for spaces. This fund will help Brave Space with food, location, and other things that Brave Spacers may need!

Your contribution means so much to us, Brave Space is for the community and we are working to build up that community so that we are able to provide more for the people who apart of Brace Space.
