Spende geschützt
This campaign is being launched on behalf of Sofia VanDinther-Loboy (13 years old) and her family (Andrea, Joe, Hudson, and Bella) in hopes of raising money to help the family through a difficult and unexpected medical situation they are facing, on top of the COVID-19 pandemic and Andrea losing a significant portion of her income as a result.
Over the past several months, Sofia has been experiencing headaches, dizziness, fatigue, and blurred vision. After many doctor visits and an MRI, she was diagnosed with a Type 1 Chiari Malformation. In short, part of Sofia’s brain is compressed by her skull. This condition is serious and requires corrective brain surgery. The best surgeon for this, is not, however, in Alaska, but in Seattle, WA. The family will have to travel from their home in Homer, AK and stay in Seattle, WA for the surgery and recovery time.
To know Sofia is to know an intelligent, determined, and delightful young woman, wise, it seems, beyond her years. She is hardworking, an A+ student with her sights on becoming a brain surgeon. She is a ballet dancer, and while she loves cross country running, and camping and fishing with her family, she mostly prefers to be studying, researching, and working ahead on her classwork. Lately, I’ve been following Sofia on Instagram and have been inspired by her posts about racial and social justice. She’s passionate and informed, and she has a strong sense of what is right and what is wrong. Seeing what she has to say and what she cares about most gives me hope for the future. She’ll be leading us all someday.
When I last spent an extended period of time with Sofia, she told me about her dreams of becoming a surgeon or doctor someday. I imagine her coming experience with brain surgery will make her an even stronger future surgeon as she’ll be able to relate to her patients on a very personal level.
The VanDinther-Loboy family have been active members of the Homer, AK community for many years. They are loved dearly by neighbors and friends alike. They are known as the ones who are first to help and support others, and now they are in need. Sofia's mother Andrea lost half of her job due to COVID-19, making the financial struggle event greater.
Sofia and her family are holding onto each other and are working together to face this serious neurological condition and the delicate surgery that is scheduled for the second week of October. Her family is facing the uncertainty and the financial burden. While we can’t resolve all of the problems Sofia and the VanDinther-Loboy family face today, we can sincerely help by supporting them financially. If you can, please donate to support them. If you can’t afford to, please share this campaign with your family and friends. If you can’t do either, leave a message of support and encouragement for all of them.
We are not just supporting Sofia and her family through this difficult time; we are also funding Sofia’s future and her ability to go to college and to become that brain surgeon she is determined to be. And that makes it our future as well, Sofia’s drive, intelligence, ambition, sense of justice, and her kindness make her an asset to the future of our world. Let’s make sure she’s in it.
Please donate, share, and/or leave a message of encouragement for Sofia and her family.
