Brad needs a liver transplant
Beschermde donatie
Hi Everyone!
Let’s be real, this is very awkward to write. I’m Brad and I need a liver transplant. When I was 13 years old I was diagnosed with Alpha One Antitrypsin Disorder (Alpha-1), this lead to me having cirrhosis of the liver. With this I’ve always had to keep my liver as healthy as possible so I’ve never drank alcohol in my life. That made me really fun at college parties ha.
Well I made it another 20 years since first being diagnosed without many real issues, until recently. I am now currently active on the liver transplant list. When most people think of this list, they think of getting a liver from a deceased donor. This is an option for me, but it is looking like I might be getting very lucky with another route. They are able to do living liver donors and my brother, Eric, has stepped up to the plate and gone through the evaluation. All signs are pointing to this being a valuable option for me. With this procedure, they would be taking part of his liver and putting it in me. I would encourage you to research how this is done, because it’s pretty interesting (or maybe I just look up weird things at 1 am). The goal for us and the hospital is to have this surgery in July.
With the living donations this would mean that there is extensive recovery for both my brother and myself. We will both be in the hospital for 7-10 days but then will have to live in the Salt Lake City area for awhile after surgery. I would be looking at around 6 weeks and he will be around 4 weeks.
While my insurance does cover the medical aspect for both Eric and myself, it does not cover the living expenses that will come with having to relocate for that time. I live in the Boise, Idaho area and he is in Colorado Springs. I will be renting an Airbnb for the both of us but also we will have our caretakers in the house with us, since they have to be with us 24/7. The money raised from this fund will go to covering this housing cost for all people involved. Extra will go towards things such as travel costs and food.
If you have read this far, then thank you. All donations would be very appreciated and really help out. Even if you are not able to donate, I would encourage you to go to donatelife.org and register to become an organ donor. Thank you again for all the support throughout this process.
