The Background:
My name is Elliot Suarez (second to the left), and I am a pediatrician practicing in Boston. I travel to Managua, Nicaragua every year to serve as volunteer Medical Director of the Hope World Wide Community Service Brigade.
Every year, I serve with dozens of doctors, nurses, pharmacists, dentists, educators and building contractors who donate their time, skills and experience to serve the poorest communities of Central America.
The Challenge:
I want to solve the problem of the half-empty planes. When I started going to Central America as a volunteer physician 5 years ago, the flights were overbooked. The seats in the planes were filled with church groups, medical volunteers and aid workers. But, when the US Peace Corps pulled out of Honduras three years ago, all of a sudden, the planes were half-empty. Volunteers stopped going because of security concerns. When poor communities needed help the most, the flow of resources and manpower shrunk by half. The empty seats, the extra legroom and elbowroom are not emblems of comfort. They are symbols of the gap between resources and needs.

The Opportunity:
I have been accepted to the INSEAD Business School Social Entrepreneurship Program in November 2014. This program brings humanitarian leaders from all over the world to France for a one-week, intensive course. The program focuses on teaching the administrative, fundraising and negotiation skills necessary to grow organizations that serve the common good. The benefits of this program go way beyond the one-week experience. After graduation, over 500 managers, CEO’s and directors from nearly 50 countries in all parts of the world continue to exchange ideas and collaborate in each other’s projects.
The Need:
Tuition for the ISEAD Social Entrepreneurship Program is $6,000. I have applied for scholarship money. However, the INSEAD Admissions Committee has specified that priority in funding will be given to participants from low-income countries. I am paying for my travel expenses, room and board ($3,000), but I need help paying for tuition.
Your contribution of $25 to $100 will bring me closer to the goal.
The deadline for tuition payment is August 31, 2014.
