Roosevelt Townes and Robert McDaniels, two black men, were lynched on April 13, 1937, in Duck Hill, Mississippi, by a white mob after being labeled as the murderers of a white storekeeper.
The aftermath of the carnage was the catalyst for an anti-lynching law that failed in the United States Senate.

In the award-winning film 5, A Mother’s Journey, acclaimed artist & filmmaker Talamieka Brice explores her family history regarding this event. As a child, Mrs. Brice’s grandmother relayed the horror of hearing the two men pleading for their lives.

Bootjack & Red will further dive into the lives and deaths of these men as well as document the process of placing a historical marker in the place where they took their last breaths.
