Volunteer Orphanage Work in Kenya

Donation protected
December 5th, 2013
Hey guys,

I have recently been accepted to do some orphanage work in Kenya starting January 15th, 2014. As for some of you that know me (and for those that do not)..this is something I have wanted to do since I was a very young girl. Having the ability to make a change for the better in some child's life is my ultimate goal, but lets be honest.. I am still aiming to hopefully make a bigger change than even that.

For now my mission is simple, I must raise money to help myself with living expenses while volunteering there on no salary or income and I must make several preparations in order to ensure my safety on this journey.

I will be volunteering for a reputable organization called IVHQ.
http://www.volunteerhq.org/volunteer-in-kenya . You are welcomed to research them.

FYI: The goal amount is set to $3,000 because you are required to set an amount to raise. The reason it is set to that amount is because flight and program fees will work out to be around that amount...however, additional costs such as food, bottled water, vaccinations, visa, security checks, etc etc....are not factored into that amount. I will be putting in my own savings and having help from family as well. This trip is going to be costing me potentially much more than the goal of $3,000. ANY contribution will be overly appreciated...even if it is less than a buck ! If you have any requests or questions, let me know.

On this trip I will be doing everything from cooking for the children, playing with the children, cleaning, teaching, and anything necessary to help both the children and the staff.
I am also hoping that although I applied for the orphanage program, I will also have the ability to cross over and do some volunteer work in the HIV/AIDS program and the Women's Education program. I will be staying for 3 months with a host family and sharing a bedroom with other volunteers, so any donations you provide will not be put towards luxurious hotels - I will be doing my best to live the Kenyan way and be very frugal with my expenses.

I am hoping to begin a blog and keep my loved ones and anyone else that is interested... updated on what I am doing while in Kenya. I have just received approval from IVHQ today, so I am still waiting to hear back from my volunteer representative on details and specifics of my placement and journey. These details will be shared with you asap once I put my blog up.

As most of you know, I am not the richest girl in the world but I am doing what I can to make this a reality. Any donation you provide will go towards:
- Program Fee Cost
- Flight Cost
- Room & Board
- Food & bottled water
- Material for the Orphanages/Schools
- Vaccinations (or things like malaria pills)

You may be wondering: What do I have to offer? I am a college graduate of General Arts & Science and Police Foundations and I plan on getting my degree in Social Work once I return home from Africa.I would also like to say that I have lots to offer these orphans; knowledge, patience, friendship, and love. I plan on dedicating my life to a career in Social Work & Humanitarian Aid Relief Work, so this trip will be advantageous to me greatly. It will help me gain knowledge of the Kenyan people, learn some of the Kiswahili (Swahili) language, and gain connections and the ability to network with individuals. Most importantly, it is going to give me the opportunity to make an impact on the Kenyan children with the goal of empowerment, respect, growth, and safety in mind.

Any support that you have to give me in my journey of change would be greatly appreciated and used only specifically for this volunteering process.

Much Appreciation,
Bonnie Jean O'Handley
