We are the Stony Brook chapter of Black Lives Matter and we aim to provide Black communities on Long Island with alternatives to capitalist structures for meeting their basic needs. We aim to assist Black individuals and families through initiatives in education, food scarcity, health care assistance, clothing, and other challenges for working-class people throughout the island. Our goal, in addition to meeting these basic human requirements, will be to help raise the people’s awareness of the contradictions within a social system that yields material abundance for the few and precariousness and misery for the many. Why hasn’t the government of Suffolk County done for its most vulnerable members what students have volunteered their time toward in the Black community? That is the question that community members should be asking themselves on the basis of our survival programs. The Freedom School will attempt to develop the answers with community members, incorporating our Political Education training into existing critiques of the power structure among the Black working class. Some proposed classes for our Freedom school are: Black Feminist Theory and Practice; African History; African-American History; Black Queer Theory; Capitalism and Imperialism; The Prison-Industrial Complex and the Police State
We are raising funds to help us pay for rooms to hold our freedom school sessions, printing costs, and to cover transportation costs in general to our events and actions for this coming summer.
