Black Lives Matter Solidarity Fund Nova Scotia
An emergency fund for Black people living throughout Nova Scotia

The public health response to the COVID-19 virus will continue to have an unprecedented impact on our lives and livelihoods. This means that many programs, meetings, etc. are being cancelled to keep the community safe. Such closures are necessary. However, they do have an impact on many people in our community, particularly those who are working in the service sector, such as hospitality, retail, and entertainment, and the gig community of freelancers, artists, and performers. Many in our communities will lose their sources of income for the foreseeable future and will have a difficult time making ends meet.

Additionally, school closures, while necessary, will impact the many families who rely on school meal programs to feed their children, and many are already, or soon will be, missing work to care for loved ones. In short, this is placing additional burdens on  already limited financial resources.

As a result, we are launching a fundraising campaign to create a Black Lives Matter Solidarity Fund for Black people in Nova Scotia who need support during these unprecedented times. As Black community members who work and serve in a number of areas, we have joined together to address the unique needs and issues facing Black people in the city and throughout the province. As the recent study on racial discrimination in the distribution efforts of the Halifax Relief Commission after the 1917 Explosion reminds, African Nova Scotians face unique, often overlooked challenges in moments of social and environmental crises. The COVID-19 pandemic will affect Black people in Nova Scotia in unique and disproportionate ways during this time of social distancing and isolation.

Based on the application, we will be providing a one-time stipend of $100 to Black community members in Nova Scotia through an online application process. We are launching this fund to reach out to as many people as possible. You will only be permitted to apply once, as there will be one time access only. Our goal is to provide assistance to as many in our community as possible during this crisis based on need.

This is an emergency fund for Black individuals living throughout Nova Scotia. Specifically, the intention is to support individuals who, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, will be impacted with unexpected costs such as funds for basic necessities (food, childcare, rent, utilities); for loss of income for artists, freelancers, and gig economy workers; for seniors and the elderly, persons with disabilities; and for those already facing daily challenges of capitalism and precarious housing.

As funds become available, they will be distributed via e-transfer. We will continually update community members on the status of the funds on the Gofundme page.

****To apply to the fund as a recipient, please access the application form for the Black Lives Matter Solidarity Fund for Nova Scotia here:

Please only apply if you DO NOT have access to financial alternatives such as savings, investments, continued employment, or other sufficient sources of income to meet your needs during this time.

This fund will be created based on a shared community trust system. We want to reduce the barriers that invasive questions do to accessing support, while being accountable and transparent to the community.

We want to honour this commitment by trusting that those who have the means will not apply, and leave this fund to be available to those who will be faced with undue hardships because of COVID-19.

This fund is limited. Utilizing community and corporate donations, we will continue to disburse funds for as long as we can, but recognize that this too will not be sufficient to bridge the deep gaps that this crisis has caused.

To preserve each other's privacy and dignity, we will never publish the names or personal details of the recipients, but will give periodic updates to our community through the Gofundme site on 1) the donations received, 2) the amounts disbursed, and 3) the number of individuals who have been served by this fund.

This community fund is initiated and facilitated by Lynn Jones, Twila Grosse, El Jones, and Rachel Zellars, a group of community organizers, activists, and scholars located in Halifax, NS. The community funds raised on this website will be withdrawn directly by Rachel Zellars into a separate account. The funds will be distributed via e-transfer after Lynn Jones, Twila Grosse, El Jones, and Rachel Zellars together review community applications and approve the e-transfers.
