Hello everyone! This past weekend our family dog Biscuit suffered a terrible accident when she tore her ACL while playing with her ball. She’s a 10 year old very active Chihuahua / Boston Terrier mix who just got a little too excited and landed wrong while trying to run after the ball up the hill in our backyard. Currently, she can’t put any weight down on her right back leg, which makes walking nearly impossible. She is also having a hard time going to the bathroom, as she can’t get into a comfortable position. She’s in a lot of pain, but she’s being extremely brave and managing as best she can.

We’ve taken her to our vet here in Pittsburgh (Big Easy Animal Hospital) who did preliminary X-rays to confirm her injury. They referred us to Blue Pearl Animal Hospital, where we’re waiting to set up a surgical consultation. We’ve been told by Blue Pearl already to expect the surgery and all of the follow-up to cost in the range of $6000 - $8000.

Our other option is to let it scar naturally, where it would eventually stabilize itself, but leave Biscuit prone to severe arthritis, and other residual, potentially painful effects, including a permanent limp.

While getting Biscuit proper medical care is a priority for us, we don’t have the money for the surgery readily available. We’re trying to make sure she gets the care she needs as soon as possible, but the financial burden it creates is a major hurdle.

Biscuit hasn’t always had the best life. She’s always been mildly aggressive and it’s taken a lot to get her to the point where she could be affectionate with people. She’s developed a strong bond with our 10 year old daughter and has really developed a much more gentle and loving personality. It would be a real shame to have the last years of her life hampered due to financial limitations.
