The Bialystok Cemetry Restoration Fund Inc, a 501c3 IRS registered nonprofit is asking for your help to offset costs for the upcoming summer 2020 work project.
This is will be our 5th consecutive year working at Bagnowka Cemetery in Bialystok Poland. We began our efforts in 2016 joining an existing group that began the effort in 2010. The initial group, founded by Lucy Lisowska and her volunteer team, had reset a few hundred stones prior to our group collaborating with them. Since our involvement an additional 1500 matzevot, or headstones, have been restored.
The current work utilizes heavy equipment working carefully with a highly skilled operator and team. Our methodology has been vetted, witnessed and approved by the Head Rabbi of Poland.
This cemetery once had over 30,000 matzevot standing to honor those souls who lived their lives in Bialystok. After the Nazi invasion and the Holocaust few if any Jews were left to bury their loved ones in the Bagnowka Cemetery The cemetery was desecrated many times; first by the Nazis and again the by the Communists. There are really very few folks left to care for the cemetery let alone to restore the graves and headstones. Lucy continues to facilitate and organize a small group of volunteers to wash and paint the matzevot that our team of volunteers have reset. The true heavy lifting so to speak is accomplished by our organization. We have been able to accelerate the restoration efforts which began in 2010 with our approved methodology. This effort has included volunteers from four countries and over 8 states in the U.S.
We kindly ask for your generous donations so we continue our work both here on this gofundme site or by visiting our site at bialystokcemeteryrestoration.org
We can’t do this work without you help so please provide us with much needed financial assistance.
Thank you for your consideration.
