Baxter's emergency operation & rehab
Spende geschützt
Our friend Katie, fondly known to us as KTB, is the mother of two adorable dogs - Baxter and Winston. They would play every day together , wrestle, eat sticks in the yard, share bones, and then play some more. They are inseparable, and it is clear that whenever in question, Baxter is in charge. He is the man of the manor and what he says goes, but he rules with such charm and charisma everyone is glad to follow his lead. He is the most gentle and charming pup you could imagine and always has a little grin on his face. He's strong, healthy, and loves naps as much as he loves playtime & walks.
About two weeks ago, Baxter starting slightly limping which was very unlike this indestructible beast. Katie (KTB) immediately took him to the vet that same day. Instead of something simple like a pulled muscle or something stuck in his paw, they warned KTB it was much more serious and suspected something with his spine. They sent her home with pain meds and some follow up appointments. That same evening, the problem quickly escalated and Baxter was screaming in pain and could barely move. KTB made a midnight run to the emergency. After multiple tests, MRI's, exams, and consultations the diagnosis was clear- major back surgery or he'll never walk again. The news was devastating. The burden and worry of all this was almost too much to bear but on top of it were the financials of the situation- surgery is incredibly expensive. There was simply no choice, KTB didn't hesitate for a moment and quickly drained the savings account she worked very, very hard for. So much for the major deck repair she had been working two jobs to save up for, there was nothing more important than making sure her boys are taken care of.
The surgery... didn't work. At a cost of over ten grand for that one surgery KTB was once again devastated. Baxter was paralyzed. From his midsection back he is no longer able to feel or move a thing. KTB has since needed to bring him back for more work, at more cost, again and again and again. Rehab has started, We are all hopeful some kind of recovery will occur, but for now, nothing. The bills keep piling up. KTB's living room has all been cleared out to house a new large gated dog pen which has been created to keep Baxter safe and as comfortable as possible during rehab. The long walks through the woods are now short walks in the backyard. Instead of running wild he is now walked with a harness that holds up his lower body while he strengthens his front paws for this new life. Several exercises a day, icing down his back several times a day, special meds and food, and now laser therapy is being recommended. More bills on top of bills, A small fortune. Doggie diapers, multiple bath times, short harnessed walks, massages, ice packs, it's a new way of life for this little family.
Amidst all this, Baxter remains in good spirits. KTB remains hopeful, and is doing her best to maintain both jobs while showing as much love for her little guys as anyone can imagine. Baxter's brother Winston is confused, but proudly stands just outside his brother's pen in case he's needed. The situation is truly a nightmare but the are trying to make the best of it, but the reality remains that KTB needs some help.
Katie has taken on all of this with her head high and rarely a complaint. Her sarcastic humor of the situation simply veils the tremendous sadness and worry of financial burden that has occurred literally overnight. Please, please, please give whatever amount you can to help. While you give some of your hard earned money, KTB will continue to give every waking moment, and sometimes not so awake moments, to care for her beloved boy....Baxter.
