Basic Needs Support For Manzanita SEED Families

Donation protected
MAY 25, 2021 DONATIONS CLOSED. PLEASE DO NOT DONATE TO THIS FUND ANYMORE.
THANK YOU for thirteen months of support for Oakland families during this challenging year. With all donations including Venmo, direct checks and other fundraisers to support this campaign, we raised a total of $91,232 that went to 61 families! Some were on the list the entire year and others came on and off as needed. Being in communication with families each month, I can tell you that they are deeply grateful for the support that allowed them to keep up with rent and utilities. The entire staff of Manzanita SEED thanks you so much for all of your care and generosity. Stay safe and be well.

*Update: Due to the continuation of Shelter-in-Place, we have decided to continue with our fundraiser. Last week, we were able to give 47 families $423.63 cash. They were deeply moved and grateful. In California, SIP is still in effect until at least May 31st. The  longer people are without work, the higher the need becomes. We hope to be able to give another $500 to our highest needs families by the end of the month. Thank you for your support and please share this campaign far and wide.

Manzanita SEED is a public elementary Title 1 school in Oakland, California. 66% of our student population qualifies for Free and Reduced Lunch and many of our students eat all three of their meals through our food service program. We have an enthusiastic and committed group of students who show up every day eager to learn, despite challenging circumstances.

Many of our parents work more than one job to meet their family’s basic needs such as rent, food, utilities, etc. They work as house cleaners, construction workers, janitors, day care providers, gardeners, and in the restaurant business.

Due to the spread of the Coronavirus, parents who work in these fields have had their work indefinitely suspended and they have no income at this time. These are families who already struggle to make ends meet and who do not qualify for unemployment benefits.

The teachers and support staff at our school have been diligently checking in with parents to see what their needs are. Teachers have been bringing food, diapers, cash, etc., out of their own pockets, to support families in need. A few of us have decided to start this campaign to raise funds to support our families. Our goal right now is to raise $300 for each of our 60 highest needs families. This won’t pay the rent, but it will help to alleviate some of the pressure.

All funds donated will be given to families to take care of their most immediate needs. Any amount you can contribute will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance, for your support,

SEED Teachers
