One Million Meals Coupons in Bali

Dear friends from all around the world,

During these difficult times that we are living, we want to give you an update from the island that we call home. As you know, this pandemic doesn’t just hit our healthcare system, but also our daily life here specifically the tourism industry.

The very first case in Indonesia was detected in early March and since then, the government has stopped giving visa on arrival for tourists and even prohibited any foreigners to enter Indonesia.

Consequently, the whole Bali economy collapsed within the first week. There are thousand of workers in the hotels, villas, restaurants and cafes that are being sent home without getting paid because there isn't any income. More than 80% of the economy of the island depends on the tourism/hospitality industry.

Suddenly “working from home” has become a trend globally, but this is not the case for people who work in the tourism industry and all employees lost their job. There are thousands of people who are struggling to survive until things come back to normal.

To help our community, we created ONE MILLION MEALS COUPONS MOVEMENT to help those people in need.

How does this work? One coupon equals to one time meal in a local eatery place here called warung. Each person will get 60 meal coupons per month. That means two meals per day. This is a three months program and one million coupon will feed more than 16.000 people in three months, or about 5.500 people per month.

I’m glad that people are doing what they can to help the community as I’ve seen so many good people in social media that help each other during these hard times.

Durante este periodo tan dificil, quiero darles una actualización de cómo está viviendo esta situación, la isla la cual llamo hogar. Como saben, esta pandemia no sólo afecta al sistema de salud, sino también a nuestra vida diaria aquí, incluyendo la industria del turismo.

El primer caso en Indonesia fue detectado a principios de marzo, y desde allí el gobierno dejó de dar visados a los turistas a su llegada, incluso prohibió a los extranjeros entrar en Indonesia poco después.

En consecuencia, toda la economía de Bali se derrumbó en su primera semana. Hay miles de trabajadores en los hoteles, villas, restaurantes y cafés que son enviados a casa sin pagar porque no hay ningún turista en la isla.

De repente, el "trabajo desde casa" se ha convertido en una tendencia mundial, pero no es el caso de las personas que trabajan en la industria del turismo, ya que estos empiezan a perder sus puestos de trabajo. Hay miles de personas que ahora mismo están luchando por sobrevivir hasta que las cosas vuelvan a la normalidad.

Así que con este espíritu, creamos el MOVIMIENTO DE UN MILLÓN DE CUPONES DE COMIDA para ayudar a estas personas necesitadas.

¿Cómo funciona esto? Un cupón equivale a una comida en un lugar local llamado Warung, son las casas de comida aquí en Bali. Cada persona recibirá 60 cupones de comida por mes. Eso significa dos comidas por día. Este es un programa de tres meses y un millón de cupones alimentarán a más de 16.000 personas en tres meses, o alrededor de 5.500 personas por mes.
