Baby Kingston Hospital Expenses

Kingston was born on April 13, 2019. When he was between 4-6 weeks old, his pediatrician started becoming worried about his low weight gain, and ordered some labs and a chest x-ray. His labs were a little off, but not too alarming, so my dr ordered repeats for 10 days later. These showed very distressing liver labs. The biggest concern was for a rare liver disease called Biliary Atresia. He was brought in to UCSF Benioff and admitted right away. The first major thing that was done was a liver biopsy that was not able to rule out biliary atresia. He was then scheduled for a cholangiogram procedure where they inject dye into his gall bladder, and look for it to go into the liver. If it doesn’t, a diagnosis of BA can be concluded. Kingston didn’t have a gall bladder, which is also a clear indication of BA. Fortunately, his liver was not failing yet, which meant that he was a candidate for a liver saving surgery called the Kasai procedure. This procedure is most effective when caught and done before 70 days days old. Kingston was 72 days old at the date of his procedure. The procedure works about 1/3 of the time. There is about a 60%+ chance that he still may need a liver transplant down the road (hopefully a long way down the road). We won’t really know if the Kasai procedure worked for about 1-3 months. Even if it is successful, he may still need a transplant.

He has a long road ahead of him. He’s a warrior and so is his Momma, and they WILL conquer Biliary Atresia!
