Baby Felicity Vera Bowen

Dear family and friends,
Felicity Vera Bowen was born on August 21, 2020 at 12:59pm, weighing in at 7lbs. She was taken quickly after birth for evaluation by the nursery staff, for she appeared to not maintain her oxygen saturations appropriately. She was placed on oxygen by face mask and was maintaining her oxygen levels well, however, further evaluation was needed. A team from Greenville came to further evaluate her and decided that the best place for her would be Duke University. They were unsure what was wrong but felt that the Doctors at Duke would be the best hands to get her oxygenating well. She was stabilized and flown to Duke around 6:30pm where they quickly performed and Echocardiogram or ultrasound of the heart. This test found that she has a condition called Transposition of the Great Arteries which manifests at the time of birth and is undetectable by routine prenatal ultrasounds. Essentially, the vessels that carry blood to the lungs and to the rest of the body are switched, leading to oxygenated blood going back to the lungs, and deoxygenated blood going to the rest of the body. This is why she could not maintain appropriate levels of oxygenation on her own. Zack travelled to Duke last night and stayed with Felicity and Chandler is on her way today. She is recovering well from birth and is anxious to be by Felicity's side. Due to COVID, visitation is extremely limited, but both mom and dad will be able to stay in the Duke NICU during the day, while one parent stays at night. Fisher is at home with Aunts, Grandparents, and cousins, getting anything he wants and doing well. He is excited to meet Sissy but knows she is at the Doctor's office with mommy and daddy. So far, it seems that Felicity is expected to be in the NICU for about a month, and pending open-heart surgery in the next coming days to weeks will be the anticipated plan. Currently, they are ensuring all of her other organs are functioning well and are formulating the best plan to correct this brave, strong, wonderful heart.

Prayers: Please lift this sweet family up in prayer today and throughout the course of this journey. Pray for the wonderful cardiologists who will be getting a game-plan together for sweet Felicity today. Pray that her body is completely healthy in every way to ensure no complications from the upcoming repair of this condition. Pray that the NICU physicians are able to gain great venous access through her umbilical chord for ease of drawing blood and monitoring vitals.

This sweet girl is fearfully and wonderfully made. She has been formed in her mothers womb by a God that loves her immeasurably more than we could ever know. This is a hard, long journey, but God's hand and angels will be on her and her family to show his mighty power and love through the care of Felicity.

We will continue updating as we know more!
