Skylight Respite Ranch will be a beautiful respite care home in rural northeast Kansas. Our goal is to help restore calm to stressed adoptive families. We will provide a safe, nurturing environment for children while their parents enjoy a few days of respite and learn effective ways of raising children who have serious behavior problems due to deep emotional wounds from early childhood trauma.
We, the founders of Skylight Respite Ranch, Inc., Kent and Kerry Jossie, have been there. We have twelve children, six biological and six adopted out of foster care. Our adopted children ranged in age from 4 to 14 when they joined the family, and they came with an alphabet soup of diagnoses—RAD, ADHD, PTSD, and more. There were many days when we were exhausted and frustrated, and didn’t know where to turn for help with our kids’ special needs. We desperately needed respite just to breathe and to know what we should do in the future. But respite care during the hardest times was very difficult to find. Since then we have learned effective ways of understanding and caring for the emotional needs of adopted kids.
We are creating Skylight Respite Ranch to help other families who are facing the kinds of challenges we faced. Children will participate in wholesome activities at the ranch while parents attend love-based parenting classes and then have some free time. When children return home everyone is refreshed and ready to tackle life's challenges with a new perspective.
We truly feel that families with adopted children who are going through crisis times can heal and thrive if given the chance. Skylight Respite Ranch will offer that chance. We have purchased land and incorporated as a nonprofit. We reached our initial goal of raising $3000 to apply for 501c3 status and cover legal expenses and other essential startup costs that will help get things off the ground and running toward our goals. Now we need another $6000 so the architect can create the renderings for the ranch house. We hope you'll help us by donating to our cause. Thank you in advance for your help!
