Our Mission

The Rehabilitative Initiative exists to unify rehabilitation efforts across Avenal State Prison and connect the work inside with the broader human community through growth responsibility and transformation.

We organized a 36-person team working alongside correctional officers to change the atmosphere of the yard through art until the warden made the call to stop all mural painting and the project shifted overnight. Instead of losing momentum we redirected the same energy coordination and leadership into funding an incarcerated individual’s bachelor’s degree and California water treatment certifications for several other inmates so people can return home with real jobs.

We set out with one goal and were redirected in an entirely different direction yet still achieved success by turning the same effort coordination and leadership into lasting opportunity and real outcomes for real people.
