Auburn NY Soup Kitchen Helping in a Time of Need

For over 30 years, First Love Ministries has served food to anyone in need of a meal, Monday - Friday. They have closed their doors and this community is in a food security crisis. We are in need of a prepared meal served Mon-Fri for those in need of a meal and in need of community.
This news of the closing of First Love broke my heart because they served food and community to people who otherwise would not have it. As someone who offered crisis intervention through Catholic Charities, I cannot tell you how many clients I personally have sent to their soup kitchen. Some people told me it was the only meal they would receive on weekdays and others told me it was the only time they would be in community during the day. Since hearing the news, I have lost sleep over this—brainstorming in my mind, writing a strategic plan, talking to whoever will listen—about what can be done in the immediate temporary crisis and what solutions will offer permanent food security for our community.
As of now we have created the Hunger Task Force of Auburn, NY and the temporary solution is almost wrapped up as Tuesday through Thursdays are now covered until the end of April and a bagged lunch will be offered on Mondays and Fridays.
A strategic plan has been developed for a sustainable soup kitchen offering hot lunches, employment training and catering for sustainability. This operation will be multifaceted in that it will provide food for anyone who is hungry, training and employment soft skills for people who would like to work in the restaurant industry (expanding to other industries in the future) and a ghost kitchen/catering business for the organization's sustainability. All of these departments will work together in order to provide sustenance for the community members who need it most.
