Atreyu's Healing Fund
Hi, I'm Becky and I'm the grandmother of Atreyu. The last few months have been incredibly challenging, both physically and emotionally for my family. We are unable to get through this without family and community support. Please read Trey's story, and if you feel you can assist even in the smallest amount we would appreciate it. Every little bit gets us a step closer to our goal!
This is his story:
Atreyu was born July 27, 2016, inutero they found his right kidney was slightly smaller than his left and had some fluid insided. His mommy was seeing a perinatal specialist that said this can be common and they would do an ultrasound right after birth and again at 4 weeks. Directly after birth they did another ultrasound, right kidney was the same and his left had grown a bit. Doctors suggested waiting 4-6 weeks for another ultrasound to determine the course of treatment. At his 6 week ultrasound they determined that Atreyu needed to see a urologist to be treated. The urologist ordered a few more test to ensure that his kidney was not having refulx (it wasn't), however, they found that his right kidney has a "Posterior Urethral Valve Obstruction" which is causing the urine backup. The urologist informed us that this needs to be treated by a pediatric nephrologist, so he referred us over to one. The nephrologist requested a few more scans and tests. During these scans the nephrologist also diagnosed Atreyu with "Right Renal Artery Stenosis - Narrowing" which can only be treated with surgery.
According to the nephrologist:
Atreyu's Kidney Diagnosis are congenital; and both primary issues need to be treated with surgery.
*Right Renal Artery Stenosis - Narrowing (Stent)
*Right Posterior Urethral Valve Obstruction (Stent)
They also want to use some of Atreyu's stem cells injected into his kidney to use a process founded in Japan, that once normal flow and pressure is in the kidney should allow his kidney to grow normally and possibly even catch up in size by puberty.
Kidney Sizes: Right 2.08cm Left 5.91cm
His liver values are 1.3 (almost double high normal)
The local nephrologist will be sending us to a pediatric nephrologist and vascular team in Massachusetts that has done this procedure many times successfully. Due to the procedure, and current effects on Atreyu they have suggested doing this sooner than his 8 month mark. His blood pressure has started to increase slightly, and they fear waiting too long we may see life long effects.
Why we need your support:
So, our portion of the surgery is approximately 20%, and we've been told that it would be around $72,000.00 out of pocket. We do not have great insurance for Atreyu, or ourselves to be honest. It's hard to have good insurance when you're self employed. However, we've been turned down by state assistance due to making just enough to not be eligable.
We are attempting to apply for other assistance through programs that sometimes help, but after speaking to the financial department at the hospital in Mass, they said we would most likely not qualify due to income on paper. Our time constrictions are limited and we just do not have the funds to pay for his surgery, travel expeses and living expenses while having to take care of each other, his older sister Aryana (3 years old) and Atreyu (4 1/2 months).
How the money will be spent:
It's incredibly humbling being in a position where you need the help of your friends, relatives, colleagues, and even strangers to get the medical treatment needed for your child to survive! It is a great privilege to have the support of many loving friends and family members. We realize the limits of what my closest friends and family are able to give. Although this diagnosis has completely turned our lives upside down, it has also shown us an amazing gift, the gift of asking for help.
Our goal is to raise the funds necessary to allow us to go to the Massachusetts Childrens Hospital to have the dual stents and stem cell procedures done, and then to be able to afford to continue the medication treatments at home for a minimum of two years. The cost of the surgery is $72,000, plus travel costs for our family estimated at $3,000; plua estimated $5,000 for doctors and medications after the surgery; totalling $80,000 for Atreyu's medical and surgical treatment. (The cost of living and bills, have not been included in this total).
Please, We are asking for your help.
Your support means so much to us and you are truly making a difference in our life! Thank you for anything you do to contribute. I appreciate any financial donation you make or if you can just share my story with your friends. We know with your support, prayers, and well wishes, we can get through this.
Thank you!
With love and gratitude,
Grandma & PaPa, and of course,
Leecie, Tony, Aryana & Atreyu
