Emmanuel Begin His PhD Journey to Fight Diabetes Stigma

Hi everyone, I want to introduce you to Emmanuel Ekpor, a dedicated nurse clinician and researcher from Ghana. Throughout his clinical practice, Emmanuel has seen how individuals with diabetes not only struggle with the disease itself but also face stigma—shame, blame, and discrimination that create barriers to seeking care, worsen health outcomes, and deepen health inequalities, especially in resource-limited settings.

This heartbreaking reality has fueled his passion to pursue a PhD at Deakin University, Australia, where his research will focus on developing interventions to address diabetes-related stigma. His goal is to create evidence-based solutions that ensure people with diabetes receive care without fear, without judgment, and with dignity.

Why Emmanuel Needs Your Support

Emmanuel has been awarded a scholarship that fully covers his tuition, student health insurance, and provides a generous stipend at Deakin University. However, while his scholarship ensures financial stability in the long run, he is currently facing immediate financial challenges in relocating and settling into his new environment. These include:
