This is a story about survival; a story about family.
Two years ago Kim spent several months in the hospital while her body fought off an infection. Her team of doctors told her that she should not have survived, but she was a fighter and God had other plans for her. On January 1, 2016 Kim realized her purpose.
Kim and her husband, Carl, welcomed the New Year together – not with countdowns and champagne, but with hugs and tears at the hospital. Carl had prostate cancer. That horrid word that causes so much heartache, fear, and uncertainty also woke a sense of determination, and together, they resolved to fight for their family.
Fast forward to March, as we shake off winter’s gloom and breathe in the possibilities of spring, Carl continues to fight. Although his cancer has spread, his body is responding very well to treatment. In the meantime, Kim continues her futile searches for financial support from organizations to supplement Carl’s disability insurance and cover all the medical expenses on top of their regular bills. It’s been a long road, but for every call not returned, for every time she hears, “we can’t help you”, she digs a little deeper and finds the strength to hold her family together and push forward.
I’m sure you can tell by now, Carl and Kim are rare souls. They are the first to step up and do whatever they can when someone is in need. But you will never hear Kim or Carl ask for help, so that’s why I’m asking. I’m asking you to forego a coffee and muffin or maybe a night at the movies, and make a difference for people who truly deserve and need our support.
I’m sure for many of you, this story hits home. We have all lost loved ones, or watched them suffer. If we could help, we would. We do. Because we know how precious life is; how in a blink of an eye, it could be gone. Please consider donating; there is no amount too small. Please share with your friends; there is strength and greatness in numbers. If we all gave a little to show we care a lot, the impact we can have is immeasurable.
