Hi Friends!
My name is Aziza and I am an artist looking to broaden my artistic scope and education by attending a fantastic 5 week artist residency in Cusco, Peru, in February 2023. Arquetopia started as an artist residency in Puebla, Mexico and has since expanded its campuses to Oaxaca, Italy and Peru. Arquetopia was co-founded by former students of one of my graduate mentors at the University of New Mexico and is rooted in looking at and creating art through an anti-racist, anti-colonial lens. Photography is my primary medium and I am interested in questioning the inherent power dynamics in cross cultural portrait photography, as well as turning the lens on myself in the interest of self reflection and examining what it means to be black in the Great Outdoors.
I have already been accepted and paid the deposit. Now I need help with the rest: the remaining residency cost, flight costs, and taking care of bills while I'm out of the country. I have applied for some artist grants, been rejected by a couple, and a few I won't hear back from until after the new year. As my fellow creatives already know, getting funding in the arts is incredibly competitive and challenging to secure. I have a hard time asking for help, but I'm sucking it up this time in the name of this incredible opportunity.
Additionally, I am working towards some serious upgrades for my equipment, most of all my 11 year old MacBook Pro laptop, Silvia. She’s been a workhorse for a long time now and is getting too slow to meet my needs as a photographer in the digital age. I have squeezed almost every bit of life out of this computer and I am hoping to replace her before she dies–which might be soon! The cost of a new laptop can vary with technical specifications but I will be thrilled to receive any funding that can be put towards it. The total cost of a new computer and the residency exceeds $5,000 but, if I can get close to my goal, I will be a very happy lady.

Rough Cost Breakdown
Residency deposit: $744 – already paid by me
Remaining residency cost: $2200 – includes room/board/meals/studio space!
Flight from ABQ to Peru: $900-$1200
Some bills/babysitter for Fritz the cat: $1000
New MacBook Pro laptop: $1200-$2000 – hopefully with a larger external monitor for photo editing!
