Art Girl Action
My name is Athena Estime, a Junior at Augsburg University, recipient of the Phillips Scholarship, and multi-disciplinary artist. Obtaining this Scholarship assists me to self-design and implement a service project that addresses unmet needs in Minnesota communities. My project is a summer program for Black girls called Art Girl Action. As a Phillips scholar, my project's mission addresses two interconnected issues, the lack of mental health awareness, and career readiness for the arts. Everyday stressors women in minority communities struggle with lead to poor mental health maintenance practices, which results in decreased ability to succeed in professional careers. Participants will gain a greater understanding of their personal strengths and build confidence. By accessing information and resources about mental health and career readiness, participants will leave the program equipped with the tools to succeed in all work and academic spaces of their choosing.
I wish to serve as a chain to connect students with the people and places that they can lean on. I have the opportunity to create a 3-week summer program called Art Girl Action aimed at meeting the needs of young black women/femmes and providing guidance and support to girls like me who are discovering their identities as well as their passions in the arts. The young women that participate will be emerging college students in the metro area as well as artists pursuing careers in performing arts, literary, and visual arts. I want to share everything I have learned on my own personal journey networking in Minneapolis and starting my business.
I plan to have 10 participants, with your help I can further the impact of this project and reach the needs of these passionate young women. At this time I am looking for monetary donations. Funds will go towards scholarships and wellness resources for those participating. If you do not have the means at this time, please feel free to share or contact me to donate your time or energy.
