Arkaya means light, healing and inspiration in Sanskrit, and is devoted to awakening the spirit of self awareness. Arkaya has two branches. One is to provide a platform for evolution and sharing Yogic wisdom teachings. The other branch is the Arkaya Foundation.
The vision of Arkaya Foundation, India is to enhance the lives of many humans, especially children from areas where there are limited resources and the most challenging circumstances. The Foundation empowers them to realize their untapped potential.
Arkaya Foundation has been working with families and children from underprivileged areas in Chennai, India since 2005. There have been many programs to influence children in positive ways - right from anger management sessions to lessons on gender roles to photography workshops, keeping the building of a holistic life as a foundation. Arkaya Foundation also deals with sexual harassment in offices. This ongoing work has been lead by Yogacharini Maitreyi, founder of Arkaya and the Arkaya Foundation. The main advisor and co-trustee in this work has been Mr. Paul James, an HR consultant with a huge heart who has been working in the business field for over 30 years. The Arkaya Foundation is ready to expand its’ reach and deepen the quality of its’ service to those most in need.
With the lockdowns in India and a lot of people getting sick, those most in need are unable to work or even beg for food. This includes women children and the elderly. Many are isolated and going hungry.
The main focus at this time is simple:
1. SUPPORTING AND MENTORING INDIVIDUAL FAMILIES and
2. PURCHASING AND DISTRIBUTING FOOD FOR THOSE MOST IN NEED.
What is Arkaya?
Arkaya Yoga has been systematized by Yogacharini Maitreyi. It is mindful, heart-centred and integrative. You could say that Arkaya offers the full-spectrum of yoga. Rather than just focusing on the physical aspects of the practice, it works to align the body, emotions and the mind with one’s highest potential.
The Arkaya community of teachers, students and volunteers are asking for your support to bring the children and families of the world closer to realizing their potential and to establish a strong platform to continue to expand and deepen this work.

Educational Programs:
Providing financial support for the higher education of many children
Neighbourhood coordinators as well as volunteers have also provided educational workshops and classes primarily for the children of these underprivileged areas. There were also programs educating children in order to reduce violence and sexual assault.
This work includes:
Learning respect for mother Nature and learning the benefits of growing healthy herbs in their own homes. Pots for growing were donated.
Emotional management workshops
Teaching compassionate and non-violent communication methods within the slums
Lessons on how to set healthy physical and emotional boundaries in order to stay safe and at ease
Yoga classes, workshops and trainings led by Arkaya teachers
Educational trainings and workshops by a wide variety of educators to facilitate evolution. Including business management, music and fine arts, sciences, etc.
Clean-up and Maintenance:
Work parties to clean up neighbourhoods and to maintain the cleanliness. This was done through waste management planning and education on the environmental and health concerns around garbage and pollution. Community understanding, buy-in and collaboration is vital to this process.
Health and Medical Care:
Arkaya Foundation brought in medical and health care providers. There were eye care camps where individual testing, diagnosis and provision of glasses was completed.
