Helping a homeless Veteran

Thomas is a homeless veteran who was an active duty Air Force Security Forces member who served from 1969-1973, and received an honorable discharge. He has been living on the streets for roughly the last 15 years, utilizing a storage unit or 2 unusable vehicles as a place to sleep.  He showed up at our local hockey rink about a month ago as the location serves as one of several warming locations for our County.   On 21 Jan 18, I approached Thomas and through conversation  informed him that I also was a AF Security Forces veteran and learned of his current homeless situation. While he does receive a monthly social security check, Thomas lives on the streets and tries to get by each night. Local hotels have supported him but we are trying to find a more permanent and livable situation for him.  His foremost concern is an outstanding debt to his storage unit, which is currently overdue in the amount of $850, along with another $850 to the local hotel owner.  He needs to pay $412.50 to the storage unit by 1 Feb in order to avoid his unit being auctioned off.  The storage unit is comprised of all of Thomas’s possessions, which at this point is minimal given previous involuntary auctions for old storage units he was unable to pay for, due to being in the hospital with pneumonia.

Thomas is more worried about paying back those that have tried to help him than his own debts. To give an example of Thomas’s heart, he asked if I could buy him zinc cough drops because he was not feeling well. When I brought him the cough drops, he tried to give me $10, to repay him. This was probably all the money he had on him but he wanted to repay me, which I would not accept.

Thank you for any assistance you can provide.
