To my friends, supporters, and strangers,

In December I will return to Aotearoa for 6 weeks - for the first time in 3 years, and on the eve of my 10-year anniversary of living in the USA. I will be making a new experimental documentary film and a body of photography work, titled Almost a Decade in America.

Almost a Decade in America is an experimental documentary filmed in New Zealand that interrogates how memory, belonging, trauma, and whiteness affect and inform my own sexual and cultural identity as an immigrant artist living in America. Back home we have a fierce bond with the land, based on the Maori belief that the land provides unity and identity to the people of New Zealand; it drives and sustains us.

I will take the viewer on a journey through my memory, presenting moments of happiness, loss, exploration, and liberation throughout my upbringing, each of which is deeply tied to place. I will visit many of these places for the first time in the near-decade that I have lived stateside, in many cases visiting them for the first time since my childhood. The audience is my co-pilot as I track and trace the shifting and swirling trails of my memory, with the land acting as a protagonist in itself.

The film will touch on issues of loss, love, sexual assault, gender, and whiteness through the sharing of my own personal experiences. These stories will be told in a nonlinear way - the aesthetic and narrative reflecting my view that sexuality and identity are also messy and non-linear.

Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to secure external arts funding for this project and so I am reaching out to friends, family, and my creative community to help me self-fund this major endeavor. This funding will go towards the equipment, local travel, and film costs associated with making a project of this scale. This is going to be an incredibly personal and emotional project to make. Any and all contributions are welcome and deeply appreciated.
