The Story
Alex Rashid is a Rohingya refugee on Manus. He wants to settle in Manus permanently.
After witnessing murder, rape and burning villages in Burma he fled by boat ending up on Christmas island before being transferred to Manus Island where he has been for the last 4 years.
2 years ago his life changed from total hopelessness to what he now describes as "..a beautiful life .
I have two babies, my wife, my family is here".
He was also accepted as a genuine refugee in August 2015.
Where you come in!
He is now fighting to become a PNG citizen with no assistance from the Australian funded support programs and no way to get the $4000 application fee.
His travel permit and identity documents have not been renewed by PNG authorities since expiring in January.
There is a strong possibility that without applying for citizenship Mr Rashid will be forced to leave Manus and his family.
"I just want Australia's help to stay here and start a life with my family. Nothing else. Please help me"
As a grandmother and a member of GADRC (Grandmothers Against Detention of Refugee Children)
afer reading this story ( The Age, November 10th, 2017), I felt strongly, here was a young refugee who was getting his life together and yet, without $4000 to apply for citizenship, he could be forced to leave and be separated from his family permanently.
I wanted to do something that would allow this family to stay together.
Raising the money through crowdfunding seemed the perfect solution, preferably before Christmas.
The funds will go directly to Mr Rashid to be able to make the application he so desperately needs. To get these funds to Manus I will be making arrangements through the bank to direct them to him, outside of GoFundMe.
