Ali's Bosnia Fellowship

Hi Fam & and Friends !!

As a Women's and Gender Studies major and feminist activist, my passion for women’s rights goes beyond just being an interest–it is at the core of the majority of the work I do, both inside and outside of the classroom.

Starting in high school, I became involved in leading organizations, such as the Marlborough Student Charitable Fund, which worked to further opportunities for women and girls both here within the United States and abroad. I continued to work within the realm of social justice work at UC Santa Cruz and during my gap year as a fellow at the social impact Propper Daley. My eight-month experience there solidified my interest in pursuing a career in the field of social impact.

Now, as a junior at Georgetown, I have fine-tuned my interests and challenged myself to embrace new opportunities which support women’s empowerment. As you may or may not know, I was recently selected as one of 22 students to be awarded the Georgetown University Impacts Fellowship, a highly competitive program which supports student-driven social impact projects.

As a fellow, I will spend this upcoming summer doing digital storytelling and communications projects for a women’s rights organization called Žene za Žene  (or Women for Women) in Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina. The organization was founded in 1993 to offer financial and emotional support to women displaced by the Bosnian War. Now, it continues to support Bosnian women through economic development programs, leadership workshops, and micro-finance loans for female entrepreneurs.

I’m ecstatic about the opportunity to work with a non-profit in a new context. I hope that this project will not only help elevate the work the organization is already doing, but also will inform my feminist research back here on the Hilltop.

While the fellowship will be partially funded by the College, I am tasked with funding the majority of expenses through grants and crowdfunding. After the college grant is taken into account, I am still left with an estimated budget of ~$4,000 for food, lodging, and flights for ten weeks. Because the fellowship is unpaid, I’m unable to afford to cover the costs myself. Your contribution will go along way towards making this opportunity a reality, no matter how large or small.

In exchange for your support, I’m committed to updating y’all with reflections and photographs documenting my experience (photos will be posted to www.alienright.com and on the Beeck Center's website ). I’d also love to talk to any of you one-on-one about Bosnia and Herzegovina’s history and peacebuilding process.

Please know how much I appreciate any support you can provide. If you all could pass this on to friends, family, neighbors, etc., it would mean the world to me. Every little bit goes a long way.

Thank you thank you for reading this and potentially supporting me!

Lots of love,
Ali
