Alert Dog for Sophie
Beschermde donatie
Hi family and friends!
If you don’t know me, I’m gabby, and I am the youngest of the family. I have been asked to write this post to inform you more about the crazy thing we call “life”!
You might’ve seen a fundraiser on GoFundMe two years ago for my mom (Joselyn Coarsey) who was diagnosed with ocular melonoma, or cancer in the eye. Although she still battles this rare cancer and has a multitude of hospital bills, we are so so grateful for each and every person who generously donated to help her begin treatment! It has been such an honor to see my mom own this disease instead of seeing the disease owning her.
The last couple of months have been a doozy, but we are so glad we now know what has been causing my older sister, Sophie (19), so much trouble. If you are not familiar with her medical “story”, here is a little summed up version: While lifeguarding at UGA’s athletic pool back in October, Sophie suffered a major concussion after “passing out” and falling 6 feet from the guard stand. This incident caused multiple hospitalizations and doctor visits that led us to discover that this was more than just a one-time event.
The months following her fall, Sophie battled what we call “episodes”, where she lost consciousness and passed out. These episodes occurred with no warning signs, and often happened when she was alone and help was out of reach. They progressively worsened, and she soon would have up to 8 episodes a day. Again, with a fleet of hospitalizations and confused doctors, Sophie was finally diagnosed with complex partial / general epilepsy and post concussive syndrome (due to the lifeguard stand fall). This is all compounded by vasco-vagal syncope syndrome, which is causing the drops in heart rate and blood pressure, without warning.
Since her diagnosis, Sophie has started a medication routine and is now applying for an alert dog with Retrieving Independence located in Brentwood, Tennessee. These highly trained (and adorable, if i might say) dogs can alert her up to an hour before a seizure or heart rate drop in order to prevent more falls and injuries. We understand that the price for one of these alert dogs is astronomical, but we truly believe that this would be an instrumental factor in Sophie’s care and would give her the freedom and confidence to continue the plans God has for her.
Despite the course of uncertainty, i’ve seen my sister, like my mom, take her diagnosis head on. In order for Sophie to receive one of these dogs, we need your help. You can do this by either donating through the app, sharing this post, or simply sending some prayers our way!
If you would like to look more into the huge benefits of these alert dogs and how they’re trained (or maybe just see some cute pics), Retrieving Independence’s website is https://retrievingindependence.org
