Protecting Asian American seniors & women in NYC

Donation protected
Hate crimes and senseless violence targeting Asian Americans have surged drastically since the start of the pandemic. Stop AAPI Hate has reported nearly 3,800 instances of discrimination against Asians this past year. Michelle (Mount Sinai med student) and Tiffany (9th grader) are a mentor-mentee pair that met through Apex for Youth.  They were saddened by this wave of xenophobia and hate crimes, and sickened at how a disproportionate amount of these attacks have targeted vulnerable elderly and women. To help show up for and better protect AAPI elderly, women, and LGBTQ+ folks, they started Soar Over Hate to fundraise for personal safety alarms, pepper spray, and whistles to distribute to those most in need.

They been able to use funds raised to purchase over 24,000 self defense devices for AAPI in NYC and SF. Michelle was able to pair up with Kenji Jones, another organizer doing similar work, to organize two holistic health and safety community fairs, which they named AAPI Care Fairs, involving free self defense devices, self defense classes, healthcare screening, puppy therapy, live music, and more.  Across both fairs, they have had over 4,000 attendees, 180 volunteers, and involvement of 20 community groups.

Their work has been featured on the New York Times, NBC, CBS, SF Chronicle, NBC NY, NBC Bay Area, ABC NY, Fox 5 NY, New York Times, Pix 11, Next Shark, Yahoo, AOL, World Journal, Wind Newspaper, Sing Tao, and more.

They are continuing to accept donations to broaden their reach to help more AAPI seniors, women, and LGBTQ+ around New York City feel safe.  Every cent you donate will make an impact, and we will use all funds raised beyond our goal. Each $20 donation funds personal alarms for 10 seniors. Every $10 donation funds 5 pepper sprays. These materials can help recipients feel more safe, and in the right hands could even save a life.

Please see below for more information about who they have been able to help and follow their Instagram: Soar Over Hate to stay updated and amplify their work. Please consider donating to help these folks feel more safe. Enough is enough!

If you're interested in making a tax deductible donation, please reach out to Michelle.

Thank you Kenji Jones for the partnership, Howard Chen for the operational support and Derek Kao & David Cirillo for the lovely photos.
