Alameda Isles Relief Fund

Donation protected
Alameda Isles Homeowners Association Inc. is a 55+ community located in Englewood, Florida. There are 355 homes in the community. All of the homes consist of double-wide manufactured houses.

As hurricane Irma spun through the Caribbean, the community prepared for a track that was going to be devastating to the community.

When the residents returned after the storm we found that there were about 30 homes that had been damaged, or nearly 10%. The damages consisted of roofs being blown off, lanais blown off the houses, trees falling on houses or carports being blown off. Wind insurance for these homes is very costly for the amount of return and most opt against it or cannot afford  to go to that expense.

All of our residents are retired, many of whom have been for many years, most living on limited or fixed incomes. We are establishing this account to raise funds to assist people who have sustained damage and are the least able to afford to recover from the damage.

Shareholders who have had damage and would like assistance will be able to apply in writing to a committee. They can outline whatever facts available to show the committee the damage, their need for assistance and any other information available that they would like to present. The committee will then distribute the donated funds in a deliberative and fair manner.

This further outlines our plans for the use of the funds raised:
A Shareholder demonstrated an interest in donating some money to help residents that had incurred damage from Hurricane Irma. They wanted to make a donation to the cause.

I hope to be establishing a “Go Fund Me” to this effect. I will add information about that if I am successful in creating that account.

The Charitable Non-Profit organization that I have created to handle these funds is:

                “Alameda Isles Relief Fund”

Checks may be made payable to that account and delivered to me for deposit or sent directly to the Englewood Bank and Trust, 1111 South McCall Road, Englewood, FL 34223.

Should you wish to remain anonymous, both venues will give you that opportunity.

The distribution of any funds raised will be distributed by a committee consisting of the following people:

Sally Bailey
Pat Swift
Paul Weinwurm
William Moe
Roger Kent

The people listed above either have not incurred any damage or have waived being able to apply for any of these funds. If any of these people become unavailable to serve for this disaster or some future need, similar standards will be used to choose replacement members.

Shareholders who have had damage and would like assistance will be able to apply in writing to the committee. They can outline whatever facts available to show the committee the damage, their need for assistance and any other information available that they would like to present.

I envision the decision of the committee to be made much like a scholarship decision is made. A percentage of whatever funds are raised given to applicants based on the facts presented. Unfortunately, this will take some time and not be able to be done as immediate assistance. At least people might be able to recover some of their loss after the fact.

I feel very comfortable that the people listed above are quite capable of making these decisions in an honest and fair manner.

I have agreed to coordinate this effort, the collection and distribution of funds, and any necessary meetings. I will not be a voting member of the committee.

Please contact me if you have any questions.
