Peacebuilding in Uganda

Donation protected
I’m someone that has always had a strong sense of social justice and a desire to fight for the dignity of people. I’m interested in a career that grapples with difference and tries to encourage cross-cultural understanding.

As part of my long-term goal, I’m asking for your help in pursuing a short-term one…

I am raising funds to help cover my participation in the 2014 Equator Peace Academy (EPA), to be held in Kampala, Uganda. The theme is Coping with Difference in a Foreign Land, and the goal is to learn about and help to overcome the challenges faced by refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) in East Africa. The program is run through an organization called CEDAR  (“Communities Engaging with Difference and Religion”) and prides itself on solutions-based learning.

My hope is that through the program I will:
- Enhance my cross-cultural communication and peacebuilding skills
- Build on my knowledge of global human rights and forced migration
- Better understand diversity and social inclusion in East Africa

My professional background is in journalism and youth leadership development. Right now I’m pursuing my Master’s in Global Studies at the University of Leipzig, with a focus on ethnic conflict and peacebuilding. My belief is that I will emerge from the EPA more knowledgeable, more empathetic, and in a better position to continue pursuing my academic and professional interests.

On a personal level: I’m also excited for this opportunity to see more of the world and develop my sense of what it means to be a member of the African diaspora.

The program will run from December 5-19 and I’ve received a partial scholarship from CEDAR, but I still need to raise about $2000 on my own - $1200 in additional program costs, and $800 for airfare, health insurance, and visa fees.

Any support you’re able to provide would be appreciated. I’ll be sure to bring home lots of souvenirs as thank-yous. And to keep you updated, I promise to finally start that blog so many of you have been asking about!

-xo-
