Appeal for funding
The City of Madison and its surrounding area is home to many Africans. Africans have come to Madison for many reasons over the years: education, employment, immigration, family reunification, to name a few. As this population has grown over the years, so has the need to provide the kinds of services that will help in integrating it into the wider community and creating opportunities for cultural exchanges to foster understanding.
For some time now, the African community has sought to acquire a physical structure as a meeting place within which events and activities can be organized to encourage greater cohesion and to continue to instill cultural values that will assist the younger generations face the challenges of Madison’s multicultural environment.
Recognizing this need, the City of Madison has encouraged the African community to apply for federal and city funds to acquire a church building that is up for sale in the eastern area of the city, and to establish it as a cultural center. However, in order to obtain the city’s assistance, the African community must raise a significant portion of the funding from other sources, including from individuals, social organizations, foundations, and corporations. In addition, it must present a business plan that demonstrates its organizational and financial capacity to run the cultural center in a sustainable manner for the benefit of all, especially the lower- and middle-income population around the neighborhood.
Among the services that the African Center for Community Development (“ACCD”) intends to offer are the following:
• Community Development and Cultural Exchange
• Financial Literacy
• Youth Mentoring & Programs
• Immigration Support
• Computer Lab
• Cultural & Historical Library
• Food Pantry
• Legal Resource Center
• Child Care & Summer Camp
ACCD is a consortium of a number of African social associations resident in the city, including the African Association of Madison (AAM), the African Women’s Association (AWA) as well as several associations that are national in character. Under the leadership of AAM, the African community has staged a cultural Festival that celebrated its twenty-year anniversary on August 18, 2018. This event has enjoyed the financial support of many companies and other partners who have recognized the educational, cultural, and social benefits of the event. That they have done so for so long demonstrates their trust in the African community’s commitment and capacity to run a sustained organization.
In appealing to you for financial assistance to attain the greater goal of acquiring a cultural center, ACCD is asking you to also trust that your financial resources will be used well for the welfare and development of the Madison community.
