Safiya's Path to Pediatrics

Donation protected
This fund is to help me attend the National Youth Leadership Forum: Advanced Medicine and Healthcare in Summer 2016. This campaign  will help cover tuition, travel and meals. Thank you for visiting my page.

All my life, I dreamed of becoming a “baby doctor”. I always told my mother and anyone who would listen, that I was going to be a doctor. I remember even at the age of seven, my pastor dubbing me Dr. Osei, because he knew how dedicated I was to becoming a doctor. I love children, and although I have two younger brothers, they haven’t deterred me from becoming the Pediatrician I strive to be.  They may have even influenced me to try even harder at becoming a practicing pediatrician, because I love taking care of them and acting motherly towards them. I always say I will become either a Pediatrician or an OB/GYN, because being the first person to welcome that child into the world would be an amazing thing, but so would watching that child grow and caring for them as they get sick or need a quick pick me up.

As I got older, and I began to be more vocal with my friends about my future goals, I got mixed reviews: You’ll be 30 by time you finish!  Don’t you know medical school is expensive? You’ll never become a doctor. Maybe you should try something easier, like business. But I also have wonderful people who support me and encourage me to follow my dreams, and I have claimed the title of M.D. as if I’ve already achieved my goals. Instead of letting the Negative Nancy’s steer my actions, I listen to the people that uplift me, and try to find ways to further advance me toward helping children like I hope to do. I know this may sound cliché, but children are our future, and if there’s no one to keep them healthy and motivated, how can we believe our world will last for future generations? I plan on being around a long time, and making sure these young ones can stay a while too.

All children deserve to live a happy and long life, and I hope by getting this opportunity to work with some practicing pediatricians like Dr. H Carrie Chen and Dr. Ingrid Walker-Descartes, that I will be able to help our youth live long lives. I hear more people around me saying I believe in you. You can do whatever you set your mind to. Don’t give up. It may not be easy, but I’ll be here. Every day, I think about the positives and the good I can do in the world. Wherever I end up, I hope it’s taking care of the one kid who always seems to have a runny nose.
