The Free Press is an independent weekly newspaper based in Camden, Maine. Founded in 1985, the shopper-sized tabloid has grown a cult following in the midcoast for its solid event listings, smart columnists and unique angles on local and statewide news.
As the name suggests, the newspaper is free, but it costs real money to produce. Thanks to local businesses, we’ve put out a paper every week since 1985 on advertising revenue alone.
At the same time, it wasn’t unusual for a reader to leave a $20 bill on the counter as a gesture of gratitude, or to send us a check in the mail with a note expressing hope that we would keep doing what we’re doing.
Now we’re making that a regular option for readers who want to support The Free Press directly.
