Adrian the Good Samaritan

On Tuesday night, I got a flat tire on Valparaiso Ave in Atherton, CA.  I called roadside assistance and they said they would send someone in about an hour.  My daughter Kyra drove to where I was to check on me and then went to the nearest gas station to see if they could help.  Because it was 5:50 pm and they closed at 6 pm, the manager said that they couldn't help.

At 6 pm when the shop closed, Adrian decided to drive over to where I was and see if he could help.  He said that he thought he might as well drive by and see if I looked like a nice person.  He had all of the tools in his car and spent about an hour changing my tire.

He repeatedly apologized to me for how long it was taking.  He also told me that he is happy to help people on the side of the road because he is in no hurry to go home - because he sleeps in his car on the weeknights.  He works in Atherton to pay two rents for his parents and his former girlfriend and 3 year old son.  He drives home to a town near Modesto to stay with his parents and son on the weekends.  He also works nights when he can.

This happened in one of the wealthiest towns in the U.S.  I have a new car.  And, he was helping me to avoid being alone in a parking lot until he got up the next day to go to work and do it all again.

You might think this guy was on the take but I know he wasn't.  He told me straight away that he was helping me for free and did not expect any payment.  He seemed genuinely surprised and shocked when I gave him the $40 I had with me.  He could not have been nicer and I want to find a way to show him that he is really a good guy and that other people care about him.

Any money this effort raises goes straight to Adrian and my guess is that he will give it to his parents or spend it on his son.  Please donate any amount to help me show Adrian that what goes around, comes around and he deserves some good to come his way.
