Addressing trauma through wellness and self-care in 2021.
2020 has been a difficult year. DFAM's mission is to provide wellness and self-care to trauma survivors, and in 2020 we have witnessed the persistence of old sources of trauma along with the rise of new ones. Our original focus on caring for survivors of natural disasters and domestic violence has been augmented by a new call to care for those affected by neighborhood violence, the coronavirus pandemic, and the passionate calls to ensure that Black lives matter. With personal movement limited and people often confined to their homes, advocates express rising concern that various forms of violence are going unseen. Our community-based partners in New York, Chicago, and Puerto Rico affirm that DFAM's services offer a balm to their clients in these trying times when no end is in sight. In the last few months, we have begun to offer our wellness and self-care events on a smaller scale, following coronavirus health protocols for decreased density, social distancing, enhanced cleaning and the use of personal protective equipment. We are planning to stage new events in all our program locations during the first half of 2021. In addition to our usual services of free haircuts and massages provided by our volunteers, these events also will pilot a new effort to offer professional education to stylists who regularly serve the clients of our community-based partners. While DFAM stylists only visit occasionally, the communities served by our partner organizations have stylists of their own. DFAM volunteers, who regularly offer professional education at the highest levels of the beauty business, will provide tailored lessons and professional tools to these stylists as part of our services. We thus hope to add new stylists to DFAM's volunteer base, and expand our ability to offer free services to trauma survivors. The arrival of 2021 does not herald a return to normal. But DFAM recognizes that the need for our services is greater than ever, and we are committed to doing all we can to rise to the challenge. Please consider supporting our work.
