We are raising funds to bring A Man of His Word to life.

A hybrid documentary with a unique exploration of identity, memory, and perception. It examines that space between who someone believes they are… and how they are experienced by others.

Through its spaghetti western-inspired stylisation, A Man Of His Word is a film about a father and a son, and the distance that can exist between them.

ABOUT THE FILM

A man tells his story.

Not through images, but through voice.

He defines himself in words, what he’s lived through, and most importantly who he believes himself to be.

His narration is steady, deliberate, and certain. It asks to be trusted, but the film does not belong to his voice alone.

What he says is never simply shown…it is answered.

His perspective exists entirely in sound, language, and control.

The son’s perspective exists in image.

Materialised through reenactments and shifting images of his father, the visuals do not confirm his story, they interpret it. They question it. They drift alongside it, sometimes in harmony, sometimes in quiet resistance.
At times, the image takes him seriously and at his word.

At others, it lets his performance show.

A voice that insists and an image that observes.

This film is not here to tell you which is true. A Man of His Word invites you to live in the space between.

WHY THIS MATTERS

This project tells a Colombian story, but it also reflects the broader reality of Australia as a country with hundreds of cultures and migrant experiences all intertwined. By sharing stories like this, we get to celebrate and highlight the voices of those who are usually talked over, but deserve to be seen and heard.

This project began as an exploration of my own culture and an attempt to help a Colombian father reflect on how his incarceration impacted his child.

But that version felt too simple.

With time, it has developed into an exploration of something less defined, now following the tension between two perceptions. It doesn’t aim to expose or correct, it sits in uncertainty. Because identity isn’t one-dimensional, it’s shaped by experience, performed to those around you, and constantly reinterpreted .

And sometimes, the people closest to us remain the hardest to fully understand.
