A LONG ROAD FOR LONGHORNS
For some of the cows, they have lived their whole life on a ranch in Ardmore, Oklahoma. This is the only home some of them have ever known, a beautiful place with all they could ever want. But rain has become scarce, and the grass has dried. Dan and Lill, the kind human guardians of the herd, have to haul hay and water to the pasture every day. They seem tired, walking more slowly— and troubled. They’re worried now that they are getting older that one day soon they will no longer be able to care for the families of Longhorn and Angus. Dan and Lill are concerned that if Dan were to fall again, get sick or worse---their bonded families of cattle would certainly be sent to slaughter. Dan and Lill are sad for them, and want to be sure to get the herd safely placed in forever safe homes. They are trying so hard to place the bonded groups and pairs together---And we want to help them!
A collaborative effort with Return to Freedom, Argo films & All Seated In a Barn. Please let us know if you want to join our fundraising team and work together for this happy ending!
As soon as we have transport funds for the first trip ($ 6000), these lucky cows begin their journey to their new safe forever home, and Dan and Lill can rest reassured that their beloved herd will never fall into the slaughter pipeline.

While there is also outreach to find new homes for all the cows, Rosette and her immediate family of 9—Cher and her baby girl, Shari and her baby girl, Precious, Berry, plus their babies soon to be born—in addition Mary’s offspring and up to 30 cattle- depending on transport funds- have been promised a safe and beautiful new home on 1400 acres owned by a supporter of Return to Freedom. Here they will live among rescued horses, burros and goats in the rolling oak studded pastures in San Luis Obispo County California—protected for their lifetime.
But this will only happen if we can raise the funds to transport them. That is our part!
Says RTF Founder, Neda DeMayo, “For the past 25 years we’ve been home to many hundreds of wild horses and burros who sadly lost their place on the range. Our primary focus has always been keeping family bands and bonded social groups together… sometimes even finding those who have been separated during capture and reuniting them at the sanctuary. When we heard about Dan and Lill’s heartbreaking plight we wanted to do what we could to help. Keeping Rosette and her family together seemed like a natural for RTF.”
In California, Rosetta and her family will have a safe and loving home, but help is needed ASAP to start their new chapter. Can you please chip in—anything—to restore the cows’ peaceful lives and, very importantly, give the kind people who have loved and cared for them–Dan and Lill–peace of mind in this bittersweet time for them?
You can help create Rosette’s happily-ever-after. You can help give her and her family a forever home. Rosette and Family will eat up a storm, so any funds donated above the cost of transport will be used for the cows’ feed and care!
Thank you for caring about Rosette and her family. They need us all right now.
