On New Year’s morning, our family received the kind of news no one is ever prepared for.
Last night, DL and her daughter Isabella attended the Boise Potato Drop to celebrate the New Year. What was supposed to be a fun and memorable first Potato Drop experience, quickly turned into a life-altering tragedy. During the fireworks display, an explosion caused nearby windows to shatter. A piece of glass struck Isabella in the face.
Bella was rushed immediately to St. Luke’s Children’s Hospital, where she underwent three hours of surgery. A specialist was required to graft skin, and she now faces a long and difficult road to recovery. Bella has also been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), which can make processing trauma, medical procedures, pain, and sudden changes especially overwhelming. Because of this, her recovery, both physically and emotionally, may be more complex and require additional specialized support and therapy.
Beyond the physical healing, the emotional impact of such a traumatic event is profound, and symptoms of trauma are a very real concern for both Bella and her mother.
As they focus on Bella’s recovery, the family is now facing overwhelming medical bills, ICU care, ongoing therapy, and the need for additional support at home. Richard will need to take time off work to care for and support his wife and daughter as they navigate this incredibly difficult time.
Any donation, no matter the amount, will help ease the financial burden and allow this family to focus on healing. If you’re unable to give, prayers, love, and sharing this fundraiser mean more than words can express.
How Funds Will Be Used
Funds raised will go directly toward Bella’s medical care, including hospital bills, surgeries, follow-up appointments, medications, and any future procedures related to her injuries. Donations will also help cover trauma-informed therapy for Bella and her family, as the emotional impact of this event is still unfolding. Additional support will assist with lost income while her parents focus on caregiving, travel to medical appointments, and temporary help at home. A portion of funds may be used for legal retainers, medical record retrieval, and related expenses as the family seeks legal guidance to understand their options moving forward. Because the long-term effects of this injury are still unknown, funds will also help prepare for future medical, therapeutic, and recovery-related needs.
We are deeply grateful to the first responder on scene who ensured Bella was transported safely and quickly, as well as the compassionate bystanders who stopped to help in those terrifying moments.
Thank you for your kindness, support, and prayers during this time.
