Our Story
Located in Lower Northeast Philadelphia is our school, Ziegler Elementary. We are raising funds to recreate our school yard for our students, and we NEED your HELP! On average we serve about 600 students that are considered economically disadvantaged and all qualify for free lunch. Our goal here has always been to provide students with an education that will help them on the path to choosing their future.

However, as our pictures will show, the recess yard that our students have is rough, made of asphalt, mud and many times is unsafe for our children to play in. When students go to recess, they experience scrapes, cuts, and fights rather than the joy and bonds they build from playing with their peers. Our students often have no other outlet to release their built-up energy during school and we are looking to create a space that will allow them to use that energy productively.

Research shows that play is an important part of a child’s development and often improves learning readiness, learning behaviors, and problem-solving skills. Please consider donating to our project with whatever you can afford. Even $1 will help us to get to our goal and help us provide our students with the play yard that they deserve.

Thank you endlessly for your support!

Sincerely,

Principal (Mr. Berretta), Mr. Comfort (Gym Teacher), Mrs. Freeman (Dean)

Why
Currently our recess yard is a barren 20,000+ square feet of asphalt and mud surrounded by a dilapidated chain-link fence. There are no play structures, no basketball hoops, and barely enough space for all the students and adults. When students go to recess, the experience is more punctuated by the scrapes, cuts, and fights rather than the joy and bonds they build from playing with their peers.

Outside of school, many of our students must either cross Bustleton Avenue or Roosevelt Boulevard – both dangerous thoroughfares – and walk more than a mile to get to the nearest playground. Having a playground at Ziegler would provide a convenient outlet for our students and neighborhood kids to engage in positive/productive activities rather than walking across Bustleton or Roosevelt Blvd to get to another park, or, worse yet, attempt to create "fun" on the streets in our neighborhood.
