Are this past year’s urgent reports on climate change and the environment leaving you feeling over-informed but under-empowered? Overwhelmed and unsure what to do? XR Toronto plans ongoing joyful disruption of business as usual to make government take real climate action, and we could use your support.
What we want, and what we are doing
Extinction Rebellion Toronto is the Toronto chapter of an international movement that uses non-violent civil disobedience to achieve the dramatic and real policy change that we need. Our aim is to prevent mass extinction and ecological collapse.
The Extinction Rebellion movement has these three demands.
TELL THE TRUTH: Government must tell the truth by declaring a climate and ecological emergency, working with other institutions to communicate the urgency for change.
ACT NOW: Government must act now to halt biodiversity loss and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2025.
BEYOND POLITICS: Government must create and be led by the decisions of a Citizens’ Assembly on climate and ecological justice.
XR-Toronto is taking action on these goals in our city, adding a Toronto voice and energy to the international movement. We are less than a year old, but growing fast. We aim to strengthen in numbers and capacity until we have so many people engaged in disruptive actions in the streets that we cannot be ignored.
With its considerable reliance on government-subsidized fossil fuel projects, Canada is crucial in the struggle to halt the greed-driven destruction of the global ecology, and in promoting alternatives that leave no one behind. This past June 2019, our federal government finally joined several other countries, as well as countless cities around the world, in declaring a climate emergency. But so far we see very little action to take this beyond lip-service and modest, market-based reforms that simply do not match the urgency of the problem. In fact, on the very day after its emergency declaration, the government also approved the expansion of the Trans Mountain pipeline. This will produce the equivalent in carbon emissions of adding almost four million cars to the road.
Canada also has a vital responsibility to uplift the groups and populations around the world that are most vulnerable to climate-related disaster, incorporating indigenous knowledge into a responsible transformation of our energy production and use.
The role of XR is not to lay out a detailed analysis of the problem however; scientists have done this work already. When people actually look into the climate crisis they see how serious it is. We need to move more people from angst to action, and to promote the realization that a dead planet is not inevitable. We plan and enact continuous non-violent disruptions that range from something as fun and mild as singing in the subway, to less polite, but still cheerful interruptions of the meetings and banquets of those who are killing us. This is how we will compel those in power to act on the undeniable facts.
What we will do with your contribution:
We are volunteer run and have many professionals contributing time and in-kind donations, but we have some unavoidable expenses. Money from this fundraiser will be used for art supplies, transportation of materials and people, maintaining a web platform, and legal costs as we move to stronger nonviolent actions. We are transparent about our costs, and our past spending is available in general terms through our website.
