Ubuntu Resource Centre

Donation protected

The southern African philosophy of "Ubuntu" expresses that every individual coexists in part of a larger whole.  Every individual has something to offer humanity.  We are all tied together- whether it be as a school, nation, or world.  The Ubuntu Resource Centre will continue to bridge gaps between Walmer High School and its surrounding environment by welcoming outside visitors, donors, and tutors.  We want these guests to feel welcome and have the necessary materials for their usual activities.  This study space will be used for tutoring, university counseling, and partnership meetings. Teachers can also use the Centre to conduct more interactive, technology-based lessons. We believe this Resource Centre will serve as an investment for developing the gifts of these individual students, which will benefit South Africa as a whole.

Two years ago, Fulbright English Teaching Assistants refurbished the Umthombo Wolwazi Library to become a beacon of hope and source of knowledge for the Walmer High School community.  It has gone above and beyond its purpose, but the school needs another safe haven for the students besides the Library, as it has become overcrowded.  We envision the Ubuntu Resource Centre to be used as a place where tutors, visitors, and students can feel welcome.

Many of the classrooms at the school lack proper resources to accommodate learning needs.  The lack of electricity, doors, and proper tiling stifles academic development.  We hope this Resource Centre will provide a vibrant and welcoming environment where both learners and visitors can reach their potential.

Walmer High School is the definition of a success story.  It is the only secondary school of Walmer Township, an area that due to the restraints of apartheid did not have a high school until 1991.  Under the guidance of Principal Lunga Dyani, the school has progressed from having only 1 college eligible student in 2007 to 22 in 2012.  Walmer High School has become one of the most distinguished township schools in the Eastern Cape Province and this space will reflect its achievements.

We have seen the Library inspire Walmer students who flock to check in books during break time and come early in the morning to do homework.  The Library has accommodated learners from grade 8 to grade 12 at every reading level.  Now is the time for us to expand and truly give these learners the tools they need to reach their potential.  The learners themselves are ready to succeed, but they need a platform which requires your help.

Please consider donating to our fundraising efforts and expressing your affirmation in the Ubuntu philosophy- we are not individuals, but all connected to one another and therefore must help one another however we can.

"You can't be human all by yourself, and when you have this quality "“ Ubuntu- you are known for your generosity. We think of ourselves far too frequently as just individuals, separated from one another, whereas you are connected and what you do affects the whole World." - Desmond Tutu
