WHO WE ARE
My name is Kaylee Poplawski and I am a volunteer for THE SPRING OF TAMPA BAY, Hillsborough County’s certified domestic violence center. The mission of The Spring is to prevent domestic violence, protect victims and promote change in lives, families and communities.

WHAT WE DO
The Spring operates a 24-Hour DV Hotline, 102-bed Emergency Shelter, 12-unit Transitional Housing complex and extensive Outreach Services to survivors of domestic violence. We also have multiple special services for victims: on-site attorneys to help with safety issues or family law matters; staff who specialize in health & wellness, financial literacy and educational supports; and a program partner who houses family pets so they won’t be left behind with the abuser. At the foundation of every service The Spring provides is empowerment and safety planning – and all services are offered to survivors FREE of charge.

WHO WE SERVE
Most of the adults we serve are young women, living in poverty, with limited resources. Almost half the residents in our emergency shelter are the children of victims.
Last year 2,483 individuals participated in The Spring’s programs, and we responded to 8,475 crisis calls on our 24-hour hotline. We provided 41,413 days of shelter to 645 women, 4 men, and 610 children. We also connected survivors with other community resources through 27,694 referrals.

WHAT WE NEED
The Spring of Tampa Bay is building an additional residence hall on the campus of our existing 102-bed emergency shelter, which will provide another 26 beds for women and children, and we need YOUR HELP to raise $8,000 to furnish two of the rooms. Funds to furnish two rooms will give 12 people a safe and comfortable place to stay.

FUNDS WILL PAY FOR THE FOLLOWING
Six Bunk Beds (three in each room) – each costs $846
Four Large Dressers (two in each room) – each costs $345
Plus shipping & handling

THE IMPACT
This project will support our existing shelter program which has been serving victims of domestic violence since 1977. Unfortunately, domestic violence will affect 1 in 4 women during the course of her lifetime, and our critical emergency shelter services will continue to be needed until society does a better job of holding batterers accountable for their behavior. Because the need for safe shelter has continued to be great, we have been overcrowded for many days each year, sometimes housing 118-120 women and children in a facility designed for 102. For this reason, we are building an additional wing onto our shelter to add another 26 beds to better serve survivors in our community.
