The Open Door is ready to grow! Our food distribution center, tucked away at the end of Emerson Avenue, is bursting at the seams. We distribute nearly 1 million pounds of food a year to residents of Gloucester, Rockport, Manchester, Essex and Ipswich.
The mission of The Open Door is to alleviate the impact of hunger in our community. We use practical strategies to connect people to good food, to advocate on behalf of those in need, and to engage others in the work of building food security.
Since 2008, we have seen a 96% increase in the number of requests for food assistance.
Our programs include a Food Pantry, Community Meals, Mobile Market, Summer Meals, Good Food Box, Garden Project, Cooking Classes, Nutrition Education, SNAP Outreach and Advocacy, Holiday Meals, and much, much more.
With a final goal of $1.25 MILLION, we are pleased to announce we are almost there. With the help of a dozen early generous donors, we are within reach of our target.

Connect people to better food with dignity and respect
Double our existing dry storage space
Add a larger walk-in cooler and freezer
Develop additional parking spaces
Address the drainage issues in our back parking lot
Install a sprinkler system for the entire building
Build a level, covered loading dock
Upgrade handicapped accessiblity at entrances and bathrooms
Reconfigure our client pantry waiting and distribution areas
Create a Volunteer Center and Service Learning space
Incorporate green building principles wherever possible
Expand edible landscape and garden areas
Establish a maintenance fund for care of new facility
Retire the remaining mortgage on the building
