Of all the institutions affected by COVID-19, the most consequential could be our nation’s public schools. Virtually every K-12 student in the US has been without face-to-face instruction since March and we are on track to continue this trend well into the fall. Not only will students be missing crucial in-person instruction, but school districts across the US are dealing with crushing budget cuts that will certainly exacerbate the inequalities that already exist within the public education system.
For 90% of America’s youth, public schools are their first introduction to American society. They meet their friends, create their own identities, and envision their future dreams and ambitions. For too many years young students have been told that if they simply do well in school and work hard they will be in a position to attend college and pursue their dreams. Unfortunately, this is a false promise. At every grade level, in every district, for students of every demographic background, school is not honoring their aspirations or setting them up for success.
TNTP is one of those organizations working to ensure that all public school students get equal opportunities to achieve their success. Like us, they believe our nation’s public schools can give every student an excellent education. A nonprofit founded by teachers, TNTP works at every level of the school system to disrupt educational inequity and give more students access to the opportunities they need to reach their goals. Partnering with students, families, educators, and leaders, TNTP helps expand students’ access to grade-appropriate assignments, strong instruction, deep engagement, and teachers with high expectations—and ensure that every student and family has real opportunities to shape the experience students have in school.
All the funds raised on this platform will go to TNTP in support of their mission to create educational equity in our nation’s public schools.
