Shanice's Brazil Mission Fund

I am pleased to share with you the fantastic opportunity I have been selected for "” to join the Journey program, a leadership development experience for adult youth ministry leaders that will bring us overseas on a mission trip. Journey is sponsored by the Baptist Convention of New England and consists of an application process, multiple prep meetings and assignments over a seven-month period. Our team is comprised of 10 people representing nine congregations across New England and two team leaders.

In May 2014 we will be traveling to Rio de Janeiro, not to enjoy the World Cup Series, but to complete ministry projects and tell others about God. I am beyond excited! Everything about the Journey experience captivates my interest.

I would be grateful if you support my Journey experience through prayer. In addition, I would ask you to consider supporting me and this wonderful opportunity by contributing financially. My financial responsibility for the Journey experience is $2200. All Journey members have been asked to raise a portion of our funds. Any money raised above the $2200 will be used for continuing ministry projects in Rio after we have left and as God leads. I will personally contribute $1,000.

Finally, you may last remember me as a student earning my B.A. in English and Secondary Education (6-12) with a minor in Spanish from Virginia State University or as one pursuing my M.A. in Magazine, Newspaper and Online Journalism at Syracuse University. Please allow me to update you on all that I've been doing since my graduations in May of 2011 and 2012.

In the past year and a half I have relocated back to my hometown of Boston, MA. I thought I was on the path to pursuing a job teaching high school English or Journalism but God had different plans. In this time I have been a writer at Boston's Bay State Banner, the Hub's oldest urban weekly community newspaper. At the Banner I develop, pitch and write stories for print and digital versions of the paper, cover local arts and entertainment, education, fashion, health news and provide event/program coverage on all things specific to Boston's urban youth. I am also a blogger on arts, culture and innovation for the Future Boston Alliance, a non-profit organization seeking to revolutionize our city's creative economy, culture, transportation and civic vitality. I also work as a Receptionist at Canaccord Genuity, an investment banking firm, and am a Big Sister in the Big Sister Association of Greater Boston program which allows me to mentor a young girl from the inner city of Boston, where I grew up and still live. I'm a proud and active member of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. (Boston Alumnae Chapter). Most importantly, I am still actively involved in my church, Timothy Baptist Church, where I've been an involved member for almost 10 years. At TBC I'm currently the assistant secretary for our Sunday School as well as a member of the Mass Choir, Media Ministry, Praise & Worship Team, Monday night Bible Study and Youth Department as a youth leader. I am also in training to become a Sunday School teacher and sit on the personnel committee for the Greater Boston Baptist Association. In the past I have been very involved in our Vacation Bible School as a teacher and registrar for the program which has always been a sucessful outreach tool and one I once was a participant in as a child.
