“and now oncoming traffic is embracing more transgender children than parents”

I am sponsoring this GoFundMe campaign on behalf of Alyssa, a transgender young woman who is preparing to come out to the world.  I met Alyssa when she was thirteen and have had the honor of getting to know her well over the last five years.  Her gentle soul and courage render me speechless.  Her childhood home, though so different in the details, reminds me of my own in its icy sterility.

Imagine for a moment being raised in a devout and conservative household – the kind that not only refuses to nurture open-mindedness and sensitivity, but actively destroys it.  Add a conservative geographical area where anger and hate seem more acceptable than diversity.  Add the trial-by-fire hostility of high school.  Add being a minority.  Add being transgender.

And yet she persists with a sense of humor and a relentless belief that she will not die in that house.  That freedom is around the corner.  That her countdown is finally down to double digits.

She knows that she will most likely be cut completely from her family and extended family when she reveals her true self.  And while she has somehow become strong enough to handle that emotionally, she needs your help with the day-to-day issues it presents.  In her words…

Hello. My name is Alyssa G.  I’m a trans woman who’s starting a new life this fall as I enter college for Software Development and am able to grow into who I want to be. Unfortunately, my family, in their entirety, are not supportive of and generally opposed to LGBT people, to the extent where I would have emotional and likely financial support completely revoked from me, were I to ever be outed as transgender to them.

Currently, I am employed, and am building up a savings account to try and cushion the blow of such an event, but I’ll be paying for college and likely will be unable to work the same number of hours. It’s therefore unlikely I’ll have a large enough pool of available funds to stabilize and find housing, especially over the summer and winter break, given the costs involved, which is why I turn to GoFundMe.

My goal for this fund is $3,500, which will be enough to safely live for 2-3 months while I would find a place of residence and support myself while also not interrupting my education during the spring and fall, and would allow me to live without the anxiety of having to choose between paying for classes and eating enough, while also remaining independent, in the event worse comes to worst.

To reach this goal, I reach out to my community. Friends and loved ones - I ask you to share this with whomever you think may be able to spare even a dollar, and to consider if you’re able to do the same. Whatever happens, though, I appreciate everyone for giving this page a read. Thank you, and take care.
