The Story
In 1914, my grandparents, Dr. Arthur & Mrs. Maude Piper, sailed across the ocean to the Dark Continent of Africa. Their mission was to begin a medical facility in the Belgium Congo (now the Democratic Republic of Congo). It began with patients coming to the front porch of their house for treatment and has since grown into a 120 bed hospital serving a community of 140,000. It is the largest employer in the area and a well known teaching hospital. 1915 brought the birth of my mother, the first white baby born at Kapanga. Years later my mother attended nursing school and met my father, a physician, while they both attended tropical medicine school. They both served at Piper Memorial Hospital (now Samuteb Memorial Hospital).
Costs
Samuteb Memorial Hospital has provided a "wish list" of items: Bandaids/Adhesive tape, Blood Pressure Cuffs, Compresses, Cotton Balls, Denatured Alcohol, Diathermy Knife, French/English Medical Dictionaries, Laptop Computers (3), Plaster for Casts, Sterile Gloves, Sutures, Thermometers, and Walkie Talkies (10).
How Can You Help?
The hospital sustains itself on donations with some support from the Methodist Mission Board. A trip is planned for June by myself and two other ladies, Nancy Woodcock Riley and Cathy Little Strate, whose parents also served in Kapanga. This trip is near and dear to our hearts - we plan to visit and volunteer at the hospital, honor our families and keep their legacy alive with the present generation of Lundas . With your help and generosity these can be "gifted" to the hospital. Any donation, even the smallest, will be greatly appreciated by myself, Cathy, Nancy and all the Congolese that will be helped by your gift. Thanking you from the bottom of my heart!
